WILD FIRES

Wild fires are testing fire fighters in many parts of the World at the moment. Lack of rain for months in some places, is making it very difficult. Whole populations and their animals are on the move, to escape the smoke and fire.

Always report smoke, do not wait to see flames or which way the smoke is going. Fires can create their own weather systems, and change directions in a flash.

The prayer is for rain and our grateful thanks to the firemen.

Stay safe, possessions are replaceable in time, human life is lost forever. Take care and help one another.

TO THE SEA

To the sea, to the sea; driving down the A3.

Traffic hold-ups here and there hindering me.

Family on board, packed in tight.

Kayaks secured fast, against being tugged, off out of sight.

Causing an accident that would not be right.

To the sea to the sea; weather is just what is needed.

Sunshine, no rain and light breezes.

We have arrived. This is where we are staying; it looks just fine.

Unpack the luggage; then it is kayak time.

Together we carry them down to the water’s edge.

To be launched into the sea, the sea, the element they were built for.

Wading out, chilling legs to climb aboard, to take the first paddle dips.

Now we are both able to enjoy the freedom and challenge of the weather and the sea.

Taking new memories and thrills of seaside kayaking adventures into the future.

STRUGGLING ROSE

I watched your arrival, slowly and surely, cruelly timed in a heat wave.

A bud struggling to open to its full potential.

Sadly, not this time.

Yet you managed to achieve what nature intended you to do.

Flowering a little squashed, yet able to present pollen and nectar for the hungry, weather-battered  bees.

SUN-SAPPED

Summer, always longed for after a grey winter.

The gradual warming and apparel changing.

Thick coats, boots stowed away, as lightweight garments are brought into play.

Not this year. A sudden arrival of temperature rises.

Off the scale, it sits over us night and day.

Delight at summer’s arrival stripped away,

As we awaken tired, already exhausted, to face another, another, and yet another heat-sapping, temperature-breaking night and day.

Work, school, sports and any outdoor activities kept to the minimum.

Opening windows to gaze hopefully at the sky,

Searching for any rain clouds to soak the land, release the heat for all living things.

The children cry in anguish, “When is it going to be cooler?”

The elderly, too; breathing is hard.

Closing the curtains to deflect the heat, leaving homes darker and a tiny bit cooler.

Animals instinctively seek shade and respite, yet there is little or none to be had.

Another night, another day, the weather forecasters say.

It will break with violent storms, so keep weather aware.

“The shops have run out of ice, ice cream, and cold lollipops; a disaster.”

At last, awakening early, a sight for sore eyes: wet patio and refreshed gardens releasing new fresh smells.

Time to open windows and doors, allowing in the much fresher, cooler air.

Bathing in the luxury of coolness, easing the heat through my flimsy night clothes,

I release my plea: please, Mr Sun, be kinder to us and reduce any advance-planned sapping, long summer heat runs, as summer has only just begun.

HEAT WAVE

When the cold of winter is reluctant to retire, we long for summer sun!

Not a heat wave!

Tender skins soon flare in painful redness, blisters rising.

Without protection of shade or cream, animals’ paws fry on sizzling roads and pavements.

Water becomes essential to carry with you and frequently sip.

Watch out for the old and the young wilting and fainting, needing support.

Wild animals and birds seek water, too, to drink and keep feathers clean to fly free.

Seek shade when possible, keep activities restricted, and cope sensibly with this burst of sun.

TYPICAL ENGLISH SCENE

The crack of willow, a gentle breeze.

The brilliant sun, showing up grass, short and green.

Players exercising for a match on this beautiful day.

Family and friends gathered together to cheer both sides on.

Time to start: spread out, chaps; keep your eyes sharp.

Leave no gaps.

The ball hurtling at speed towards the wicket.

A crack of the bat sends it spinning out of harm’s way.

A gentle clapping and murmurs of “Well done, Trevor”.

As sandwiches are munched and wine and cold drinks are consumed.

On a typical English summer’s day.

EASTER EXCITEMENT

A promise made so long ago in a land of palms and sand.

Passed down from generation to generation into far distant lands.

The message is not always the same amongst different people.

Yet, at the core of this special time, all religions teach kindness,

love and peace, and to share what you have to eat, in God’s name.

Children delight in eggs, coloured real or chocolate, made and filled, awaiting the dawn of this special celebration.

My heartfelt wish is for peace and love to reign supreme and spread around the world at this Easter time.

A happy Easter to everyone from the WobblingPen Team.

SOOTHING SOUNDS

Oh, to be at the beach today, very early when no one is about.

To walk along the water's edge with feet being chilled and caressed by saltwater drenching and movement of sand.

Releasing trapped problems to be in the moment to privately be in touch with your inner self.

With a breeze strong enough to caress thought changes, seagulls' challenging voices encourage you on.

Oh, there is nothing quite like a sea-edge stroll, to make you feel invigorated and to strengthen the soul.

SEASHORE

Walking along the seashore, dodging the waves that rush in.

Snatching a piece of seaweed, I have been told it tastes divine.

Peering into pools of entrapment, looking to see who is waiting for the next tide, to rescue them with a swish and a splash.

Pebbles when wet, can be revealed as real beauties, till they are exposed and dried by the air.

They need frequent sea washing to keep, the colours that won’t cloud or fade.

When throwing stones to skim the water, the angle you use has to be just right.

If you have an eye for decoration, driftwood and shells are there.

Providing a temptation to make something colourful and bright, to cheer up a dark, cold, stormy night.

Walking the seashore is a delight!

A GLIMPSE

Driving through the countryside on a twisty ride.

A sideways glance caught a hint of blue.

Decorating the woodland floor as we sped along. I gave a shout of joy. It is bluebell time.

Grabbing my iPad, I held it aloft, clicking frantically away.

Madness, as with hope I sought to catch the view of bluebells.

Bluebells as they should be seen: in multitudes swaying above beds of green.

Scattering a heavenly scent, once captured never to be forgotten.

Beneath trees with branches of budding fresh leaves, the sight, so brief, disappeared as we sped along.

In trepidation, my finger tapped back to see what part of the view I had trapped.

The first few were disasters, as in haste I had covered the lens with my finger.

Not what was needed at all; two more gave only a hint of what I was after.

The next, not perfect, gave a glimpse of the bluebells, a delight I was trying to capture to show you.

SILENCE OF SOLITUDE

In the silence of solitude, you hear things you never knew you had missed.

Leaves trembling audible shivers, at the wind's gentle caress.

Strange birds, frantic calling, flitting from tree to tree.

A bustling bee, dancing on flower heads, shaking their pollen-free.

Hanging on to its gathered treasure on its back legs, flying home to the hive.

The tantalizing whiff of roses, carried along on the breeze, spreading good cheer.

Dogs setting up a barking chorus, at strangers passing by.

A language, not ours floats from neighbours next door, exchanging pleasantries over the garden wall.

We are here to take it all in!

HERE COMES SUMMER

Here comes Summer, longed for all year through,

School holidays are now fast approaching, too.

Exams will soon be over. What shall we do?

The choices vary between us, as our ages dictate.

Some will be restrained by parents with controlled play.

Others will have holidays abroad by boat or plane.

Budgets for many are oh so tight, they can’t afford such delight.

A part-time job, perhaps the first, comes into sight,

An experience some might remember for the rest of their lives.

Summer is a potpourri of feelings, not all dependent on the weather.

Sometimes friendships long cemented become fragmented.

New relationships burst into view, changing everything.

Ideas that have been churning around have time to expand.

Before you know it, a new business could be planned.

House reviews come to fruition: do we need all the clutter we have?

Wails of distress when you have to let go of things from the past.

Negotiations are required to retain those you love the most.

Summer weather can be a friend or foe.

It can disrupt, causing wails of despair when best-laid plans go awry.

An overabundance of sun interferes with travel and play.

Heatstroke can put you to bed for a couple of days.

Pets too can suffer, needing special care and no middle-of-the-day walks,

Otherwise, burnt paws may cause a trip to the vet and pain for your pet.

Carry water plenty to drink in the car; never lock and leave children or pets unattended in hot weather.

Just the right amount of sun is such fun and brings out the best in almost everyone.

Rain so needed can be such a pest

When it pours in deluges, destroying all the fun plans that you had so carefully made.

Quick thinking: rearrange everything indoors.

For others, it saves watering the garden, refreshing the lawn,

Filling up ornamental or fish ponds.

For some, it can bring destruction and despair to homes, animals and food-bearing land.

Yet it can be fun playing in the cooling rain, in puddles which appear and then simply vanish once more.

So, Summer so longed for, be kind to us, please.

Just the right amount of sun and rain for us to enjoy.

For holidays abroad with no energy and mood-draining queues.

The enjoyment of plans long in the making, just as envisaged.

House repairs and decluttering ticked off the to-do list.

Relationships repaired that had been showing some painful cracks.

New friends made, so we can look back and say, “Do you remember that Summer? Wasn’t it great?”

OH SUMMER!

Oh, summer have you lost your way?

It is northern breezes we need to wrench winter away.

Instead, the battle between you two is dragging on.

When you reach out to lift the gloom, winter fights back with fierce storms to chase, every ray of sunshine you send to warm our place.

The seeds in the soil down below no longer know which way to go.

Soil is eroding from the fields into the rivers, for fish to flee or suffer dangerous clogged-up gills.

Heating we are longing to put off to save the bills.

So stoke up your boilers and let heat fly free not too much mind, as we do not need over heating.

Push the bombastic winter on it’s way, to another country where their welcome mat is out.

For you to dance, shout, storm about dropping rain.

So they can thrive and carry on living again.

THE TOUCH OF SUMMER

When wandering out onto the deck, to feel the sun and wind collectively.

Testing if warm enough to hold my ground, to be bathed in the tang of the sea.

Nostrils tantalised by orange blossom scent, freely flowing around and around.

With bees singing, their buzzing collecting song.

The wind lifted my hair lightly to cool my scalp.

What bliss I am unable to resist.

So stand wallowing in contentment, at the first hint of a Touch of Summer.

SANCTUARY

On approaching the door, in tribulation, in the dark.

The wind rustling autumn leaves, in their final disintegrating dance,

Around her legs, back into the air again, and away.

A light came on inside as she pressed the bell.

Voices murmured quietly, and someone came to open the door.

“She is here!” went up the call, before she had time to say her name.

“Come on in, lass. You are welcome here. I’ll take your coat. Come on in. The wife is on her way.

“What a night. Do you have a case?”

“Yes, inside the porch. Thank you.”

This is the way many have arrived at The Sanctuary. Exhausted, world and travel weary, emotionally drained, in pain.

The Sanctuary provides the time, space and gentle companionship to reconnect with life and a new sought-after future.

The interior and exterior of the house play their soothing part,

As time waits for smiles and joy to burst into view.

Sitting in contemplation on summer days, under the grapevines, listening to the soothing music the pond fountain quietly plays.

Banter and laughter flow freely over a good meal, and storytelling begins.

Forty-eight times this blessed house has performed its magic.

Forty-seven times, when restored and leaving, the thanks fly with calls of “We will be back”, “We will keep in touch”, and they do, from all parts of the world.

No money changes hands, just love, lots of love.

FLYING FREE

Lying relaxed upon the grass, gazing skywards on a summer's day.

Light breezes touch my hair as they whisper by.

I watch in fascination at birds flying freely up and down.

Soaring in the thermal currents we cannot see, which sometimes tumble them around.

Occasionally drawing them upwards, sun-bound.

The birds break free and circle around and around.

My concerns drift away while I watch the performance in the sky.

’Til eyes involuntarily close and I, too, am flying free.

TIDAL FLOW

I sit to watch you trickling in, gently lapping over everything.

Feet covered by the ebb and flow of gentle caress.

A step back, if that is all you wish to accept.

A great splash of more boisterous fun is their request, until ankle-deep into the sand you sink.

When your pull is reversed, sadly it is time to go.

I SAT

I sat on the beach, with the warming blush of pink from the sunset, changing the colour of my skin.

As my mind ranged in wonder at the change within.

I reduced my breathing slowly, allowing anxiety to slip away.

I did not want to retain it. I had had quite enough for one day.

The beauty parading before me released feelings, I had kept desperately hidden inside.

Now, cleansed by the ocean’s whispering ebb and flow, diminishing and whisking them into the approaching night sky.

The brush of a breeze, soft and gentle, lifted damp strands of hair.

As the sounds of life, all about me inched their way in.

How glad I am to have sat bathed in the sunset of the dying day.

Making me more human before stepping confidently away.
