TANGLE

During our circumnavigation of the world, making human contact, in friendship and battle.

Over time and with technology, it is hard to tell friend from foe.

We are so interdependent, no matter where we live, on food, fuel, finance, armaments, water, and weather.

In this tangle that we weave, those we class as friends sleep too with our enemies, out of necessity.

Seeking water, fuel, food, armaments, and finance through the back door.

How will all this unravel? The tangle of human hate, greed, and friendship? Hard to say.

As we watch humans, their homes, and whole communities pulverised.

Instinctively, it is to keep family, friends, communities, and self-sufficiency close.

Using truth, the law, barter, and our friendships strong, to keep the peace for all living

in this oh-so-tiny, fragile world.

TAKE ME

Take me by the hand into that wonderland,

Where the grass is always green and flowers proudly stand.

As we wander to the place where children laugh and shout,

Whizzing around on that super roundabout.

Running to and fro, playing hide and seek until found out.

Stopping to play hopscotch drawn upon the ground.

Climbing onto swings, flying higher, higher with squeals of delight.

On a rocking horse, proudly king of all I can see, with you pushing me.

Then the moment comes, time to go.

“Oh no! Please can I have one more go, just one more go?”

Soon, we wander on our way to tea, storytelling and bed.

I can’t help looking back at the wonderland that had been such fun for you and me.

COME CLOSER

Come closer, come closer, let me whisper.

Come closer, come closer, let me say

How much you have meant to me as my husband,

Every night and every day.

We have not always been angels; that would not be true.

Our sharp words of disagreement fly by in a moment or two.

As we support ourselves and others with our love and wisdom during lives well lived.

Come closer, come closer, let me whisper.

Come closer come closer, let me say

Now we are getting older, time speeds faster, it seems.

We take longer to do simple, remembered things.

Memories become a little confusing, and names are difficult to recall.

We back one another in sorting them into order once more.

Our delight at the ring of the doorbell when someone comes to call.

The sharing of new stories as we retell ones from our past recalled and recalled.

Come closer, come closer, let me love you.

Come closer, come closer, let me say

Our youthful passions have dwindled, yet love has grown.

A touch, a smile, a laugh, a look kindles a tingle every time.

Our pledge of love, long-lasting, staying together is true.

As we take one day after another, sedately muddling through.

How about a cuddle and a kiss?

We are never too old for love.

Something we are so glad we have had together and never missed.

NIGHT VISITORS

They came every night, checked and left neither meeting nor chatting in the night.

I lay knowing they were there, as one by one they appeared on their mission to check I was Ok.

Once satisfied they withdrew and returned to bed.

Another visitor with four legs, was a longer companion, settling comfortably against a part of me purring.

Until the need to move was required from either of us.

I had a warm flush of love for each one, and their sharing of my time of need and vulnerability.

Each of us carries a thread of vulnerability, knowledge and caring, which once combined together forms a strong bond.

AMAZING CONNECTION

Two ladies who first met through the wonders of the internet and instantly made a connection of mutual admiration and sharing of life stories.

Their lives so far cover a similar time scale, starting in the UK. They had pretty normal family lives and (almost) shared a common family surname. They both had a desire to help others and became nurses. Once qualified, they independently headed abroad, one with Save the Children fund, and the other to a family in New Zealand. It was then their very different adventures began.

This year, 2024, they decided to meet one another in the flesh and share their amazing life experiences. Their names are Anne Watts and Penny Wobbly. The visit was arranged for 5 September 2024.

Penny Wobbly

I could not wait to meet Anne, someone I have admired for a while. We had exchanged emails, phone conversations, and Zoom meetings, where her lovely personality, sense of humour, and practical, no-nonsense approach to her amazing life experiences intrigued me.

I longed to meet her and today we did. I was like a teenager awaiting the appearance of her pop idol. Everything was ready for her arrival.

My husband set off for his dental appointment. I was going to walk to the station to meet Anne once she had notified me she was on the train. The call came and I put on my coat and collected my three-wheeler, ready to set off, when a clap of thunder and a flash of lightning announced the arrival of the forecast yellow storm. The rain thundered down, pounded on the roof and bounced off the ground in monsoon fashion. My heart sank. I couldn’t walk to the station in this, and we would most definitely not be able to walk home together either.

Rapid implementation of a cobbled-together Plan B: I rang my lovely carer and asked if her husband could run me to the station on his way to pick up their children from school, as my young man was out at the dentist. He so very kindly agreed and, on arrival, he had to back his car through a newly formed lake. I told him not to leave the car. I would manage to skirt the lake and hop in. The rain fell in stair rods, an old-fashioned description; however, once in the car, we set off on the very short ride to the station. I leapt out; well, it might not have been as swiftly as that.

Hobbling down thirty stairs to the platform, I gazed into the distance, having been told by Anne that she was at the back end of the train and wearing a bright jacket. My cataract vision was put to the test in the dull rainy light. There was a flash of bright colour heading left out of the station; if I had blinked, I would have missed her. Oh no!

I headed for the thirty steps back up to the station entrance, speeding my dot-and-carry leg action, to meet what would definitely be a dripping Anne, as the route she took was out in the deluge.

As I reached the top, she appeared around the corner, dragging her case. We hugged, and laughed; two soggy ladies, delighted to have at last been able to meet in real-time, without pens in our hands. I was in seventh heaven but had to send for the help of my young man to whisk us home when his dental visit ended.

Suddenly, the traffic snarled into an almost unmovable mass as the school day ended and parents, who normally left children to walk home, arrived to try to keep them dry.

My husband appeared and, once we settled in the car, I looked at him: he was absolutely soaked. He too had been caught in the deluge on leaving the dentist and rushing to his car up a nearby street.

What a welcome! Yet, in spite of everything, it will be remembered for a very long time by us all.

THE TIES OF FRIENDSHIP

I awoke with a feeling things were not going to go quite right today. There was no need to feel that way, as going to bed held no hint of trouble at all. This was no time to linger, just time to get up and dress to prepare for what lay ahead. The house awoke in good order, yet this feeling I could not shake.

Suddenly, it began: feelings linked to a conversation from the day before, when I was challenged about the value and quality of my friendships. Should friends be perfect or flawed? Should we build a tolerance to stay friends at all?

A friend had asked me, “Do you have any normal friends?” It shocked me. My friends are my friends; if cruelty or lack of kindness crept in, a review would be needed for sure. If severe enough, they would be politely shown the door.

I looked up and said, “If you are an example, take a look in the mirror, because your life is certainly not normal. Yet you are one of my best and most valued friends, warts and all.”

A moment of stunned silence, as the words swung between us. With a twitch of the lips, grins, giggles, and laughter expanded, before she said, “You have made a good point there. In parts, I am a bit of a mess and, thinking about it, some of my other friends are, too. Yet we share the bad and good; we muddle along and still, our friendships hold.”

I said, “If our friendships were all perfect, how boring it would be, as there would be very little to say or do. The strength of friendship is shown in troubled and complicated times when we help one another. It is also there to join in and celebrate the joyous times because that is what good friends do.”

Time and distance do not break the ties; even in death, we remain true, retaining the memories of the wonderful times we shared, and telling others of them, too. I will always be glad for the friendship we shared through thick and thin, where perfection or normality rarely crept in.

With that conversation settled in my mind, a good mood arrived.

FOREVER FRIENDS

A tribute to a wonderful friend

Personally, I am a fan

Everyone knows I am

Never has she let me down

Narrating tales with รฉlan

Yet always staying humble

Works so hard when should be resting

For other writers, she is testing

Because the standard that she sets

Becomes about as good as gets

Life is a pleasure when read her work

Yearning to match her drives berserk

Penny Wobbly my great friend

May your contribution never end

To both this life and literary world

I think without you it would be absurd

Sometimes serious and sometimes fun

Have laughed so much since we begun

To be personal friends as well as writers

Now my days are so much brighter

A simple tribute to a friend

May this friendship never end

For you don't know how much you do

Just by being simpley you

ME AND HER

Penny Wobbly & Ian Wilcox

Me and her sound absurd

For different as can be

Different genres and different ages

One likes stories one poetry

Yet a bond is form because

We speaking every day

The friendship grows and actions show

Both like to play

Play with words in the absurd

Creative knows no limits

Much deeper though when not on show

The minds and what is in it

Her and me a chemistry

A bond that is not love

Mutual respect for what inject

The calmness of the Dove

When the phone does ring joy will bring

When I see who's calling

A daily thing to make the heart sing

In a world sometimes so appalling

Me and her we concur

On many things each does

A friend with a feel of family

Have you got one too?

DELIGHT

I purred with delight when a friend gave me a call.

We had not spoken for 30 years or more.

Somehow, communications between us had mysteriously died.

We could not deliver our questions fast enough; they were so hastily applied.

We tried to bridge the missing years with friends we once knew.

Laughter burst out in the telling, as our connections grew.

Remembering other friends from such a long way back.

Memories of friends of whom we thought we had long lost track.

One thought led to another, as we arranged an urgent meeting.

So our friendship could be sealed by a hug with real warmth and feeling.

THE RATTLE OF THE TEACUP

The rattle of the tea cup.

The tinkling of the spoon.

The slightly steamy, inviting smell,

Floating around the room.

Bringing feelings good and bad into view.

Collecting a group of friends and strangers,

To share stories personal or with a disconnect.

Some just to listen to, then conveniently reject.

Others keep repeating around and around in your head

Like an old movie; no matter what you do,

You just cannot forget.

With an invitation to a second cup,

You sit relaxing more and more.

Till time runs out and goodbyes are said

As you walk out the door,

Leaving littered teacups behind.

Friendships renewed,

Troubles hidden amongst the empty teacups,

Ready for washing up.

Till another invitation to one more

Friendly tea time comes my way,

And I say yes to another cup of tea straight away.

LET MY EYES GREET THE MORNING

Let my eyes greet the morning,

To look upon your smiling face

As in repose your beauty really showed

I watched your gentle breathing

Remembering the first day

Of your long-awaited arrival.

From that first glimpse

We were linked together

I reached to give you my tender touch

Fingers opened and grasped mine

Linked together with the bond that never broke

A truly strong bond of sisterly love.

The Penny Anna Playground

The other day I was led astray

To a better place, I will admit

Joined the engrossed audience

Stopped and then did sit

In my head, I went to places

Not visited for so long

Yet here and now with this singing cow

Felt again I do belong.

The Penny Anna playground

Where everything is fun

Boys with toys and girls with curls

Dance under smiling Sun

The animals have their stories

The good in each shines through

Sometimes it has guest tellers

Maybe more than two.

It has no fixed location

In fact, has more than one

It is wherever has a reader

As each chapter has begun

A playground that's a classroom

A classroom that's a hope

A hope for encouraging young ones

In wisdom and how to cope.

Penny Anna is, in fact, two ladies

Of equal importance in my story

Both deserve the recognition

Both deserve the glory

Two outstanding figures in real life

Weaving it with make believe

Inspiring others to do something

Seeing what they could achieve ,

FRIENDSHIP

A friend walks beside you,

Supporting you through difficult times.

A friend does not leave you to blunder alone.

A friend is not judgemental.

A friend is there to confidence build.

Releasing you, when the time is right.

A friend knows when to be very close.

A friend, a true friend is there for a lifetime!

FOR YOU I AM HERE

I am here for you when you are sad,

To cuddle up close

Wipe a tear from your eye,

As you share your distress.

I listen for the clue,

That means I can help you.

I quietly caress to sooth

Your heaving chest.

Murmuring gentle words,

For you to process

To learn you did your best,

And you always will be loved by me.

REMEMBERING THE PAST

A small gathering of six old friends shared a meal, their only connection we thought was through us.

Surprise, surprise as the stories were exchanged, the connections grew and grew.

“Where were you brought up?”

Drew a blank no connection there.

“What was your first job?”

“Worked weekends in a meatpacking business as a teenager to earn pocket money, earning enough to buy a car. Sadly I earned more at the weekend than my dad did in a whole full-time week.”

A graphic description of the job was given all rather boring and horrid.

Till the gems of black humour appeared, playing unmentionable games on one another to break the tedious repetitive boredom.

The laughter started to flow as another took up their story.

“I worked in a funeral parlour for good pocket money. My job was glueing all the linings in the coffins as they stood up against the wall.”

My husband added that his father at the age of about 17 was in the army towards the end of the First World War. He was in charge of German prisoners who were searching for dead bodies, to have them identified and returned to their homeland where possible.

On his return to England, there was dreadful unemployment. He did manage to work the milk round, twice daily. He had to walk miles to get there in all weather. Slowly he worked his way up to be the manager. Not bad for a man ladling milk out of churns into the customer's jugs.

At the gathering, relaxed local connections were made from the past. They knew lots of people between them, but the last was the best.

At one time they discovered they had lived a street or two away from each other and had never met.

We laughed and laughed before I said “and your connection was through us recently made. You might never have met otherwise.”

The conversation gathered picked up pace, as more connections were made.

“I used to work for Mr ….

“ No way, to I did too, when were you there?”No, I was there before you”

“I knew a famous NZ painter once.”

“Who was that then?”

“Getaway we knew him, but knew his parents better.”

“What happened to them?”

“They moved away, didn’t they, dear?”

“Yes, we lost touch with them too.”

The topics changed to the ladies, “my dad was a big burly farmer, he taught me to knit, he used to sit in the kitchen with knitting hot water bottle covers.

I hesitated to enquire fast enough, “what for? “

Only later while going over the conversations, I think it might be for young sick lambs. I shall have to enquire!

“We travelled to India on business.”

Setting us off on another interesting topic. Involving food, smells, customs and colourful costumes, with lovely people.

Towards the end of the evening, we discovered that everyone from their hard-working beginnings had done well.

We had our own homes, some had run their own international and local businesses.

One was a scientist, the wives in the main supported their husband’s and brought up their children, before returning to work.

On retirement, we all started to travel to see the world and managed to see some interesting and exotic places.

Canal boating in England and France produced more hilarity.

As the evening drew to a close, new long term friendships were established with attached strings from the past.

I just thought you might like a glimpse of a very entertaining evening amongst friends.

FRIENDSHIP

Friendship is my thought for today.

Friendship has faced some changes since the advance and availability of the internet.

There are our day-to-day friendships; some casual, light-hearted and transient, others steadfast, lifelong, supportive, wrapped in love and caring.

Pen pals with friendships carried by letter, to friends who have moved away have changed dramatically. Over the generations, letters have been found and kept, tracing great friendship and longing to meet again; over long periods. Some never managed to reconnect; others joyfully did.

There were friendships started by the lonely, to people unknown to them. Some did end with a meeting, others never did.

Wars created great waves of pen-pals, sharing heart-felt feelings, of desperation and tender love longings. Those letters often contained drawings, snippets of hair, pressed flowers, and later photographs and some sprinkled with scent. (or tobacco, coal smoke and mud from war zones). Sometimes, the letters ended abruptly, with no knowledge of what might have happened and no way to find out - leaving feelings of bereavement and loss as strong and as tangible as touching hugging friendships did.

Because of the difficulty of transporting such letters, events could have changed dramatically from the time of writing, till receiving them, stretched over months and in the distant past, years. The postman became a vital part of this type of friendship. The arrival of the airplane speeded up communication to the delight of letter writers everywhere.

Today, we have the extraordinary arrival of the internet, with the instant connection with friends and family in real-time, both by the written word and if wanted vision.

The idea of friendship has taken on an amazing new dimension. We connect to or make tangible friends and can be passed on by them, to more friends.

Because of the ease of usage, friendships have sprung up all over the World. From the remotest of places to bustling technically advanced cities, spreading information, news and gossip in an instant.

Sometimes some of these friendships turn sour and hurtful and should not be tolerated and so delete them from your list of real friends. Report abuse is not acceptable in any friendship.

The friendships made can be amazing, very close and long-lasting. I personally have a group of good friends connected in this way. Some have become very close over the years and we share conversations of varying lengths, and laughter, lots of laughter from time to time, almost like a loving family. A few of us share more difficult or enlightening parts of our lives with its ups and downs daily. If we do not hear from one another, we call to check all is well.

This raises another issue; the loss of a connection! What to do? We no longer have the addresses on letterheads to reply to.

We rightly have to be careful who and when we share our addresses online. It has taken me years in some friendships! Others I have been able to meet and it has happened more quickly.

I have had four occasions where a loss of connection has caused great anxiety and because they live alone and were in frail health which required action. I had no address for the three of them in other countries, so looked at their profiles to see what part of their country they might live in. I then rang the nearest Police Force to report my concern. Two were medical emergencies including the one I had an address for. The other was found to have had total internet failure.

It made me think that for very close friendships over time we should share an address or telephone number for emergencies so we can activate help and support from afar.

This leads to another point for us all to consider, which is the wearing of an Emergency Alarm button and Medical Alert button or bracelet. The latter can provide life-saving information for Ambulance crews and Doctors when you are unable to speak for yourself.

I value all my friendships no matter how or when we have connected. Losses are very sad, bereavements just as difficult as tangible ones, they leave a hole in my life.

However, there is always the chance of making contact with another amazing wonderful friend. It could be today!

Say safe, be kind to one another and others when you can and stay in touch in friendship.

STRANGER NO MORE

I came one day
As a stranger,
In one week,
I left as a friend.

Now my heart strings,
Will pull me back,
Here again,
Again and again.

MOAN, MOAN, MOAN

Moan, moan, moan, all you ever do is moan.
Why don’t you just leave home I would be better off here without you.
How many times a day is this shouted in frustration in Our World.
A word too many are spoken and long relationships are broken.

You send them on their way with angry words spoken.
Slam the door, pace the floor, having a solo conversation.
Waving arms about, having a good shout in frustration.
Slamming cupboard doors in retaliation for a broken relationship.

Tears flow as you start to think is this the end.
Was it so bad, could we have changed?
Sobs start to slow, as realisation says it is time to end it.
The dog curls up close, to provide the vital loving friendship.
