BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Sitting in a taxi, idly glancing as we slip past door after door and streets broad and narrow.

Past road works and traffic jams hindering our carefully timed arrival.

A thought gathered pace: nearby town houses are arranged in tightly spaced terraces with concreted front gardens for cars. Or towering in high-rise homes, hoping the lifts will keep functioning.

Each door has an individual invitation, stamped and decorated with the owner’s taste.

Unless they are rented from an estate, then no choice is allowed as they march uniformly in the obligatory regimented line.

Gathering speed, we slip to the edge of town, the houses larger and further apart, with gardens colourfully manicured, stand proud. Till finally the countryside comes into view, revealing farms, wide open spaces, with tucked-away small hamlets and villages, appearing to stretch the view and senses.

On our way back, I wondered, who lived behind the closed doors?

Just because a house looked grand, even elegant with a dark green, shiny painted door, with a brilliantly polished brass door knocker and letter box. With curtains beautifully draped, all inviting a second look.

It may hide a family in terror of abuse, or awaiting financial ruin and unseen unhappiness.

Yet to the outside observer, it is to be envied. “Wish I could live in a house like that, lucky people.”

Other houses looking tired, even neglected, can contain an older couple, waiting to say goodbye to all they hold dear.

Or a family living in amazing happiness, on limited means, yet sharing what they have with others in the neighbourhood.

It is hard to know what goes on behind closed doors.

THE MATCH

Meticulously planned years ahead for two world-winning teams playing head-to-head. Fans of both pour from all four corners of the Earth to cheer their heroes on for all they are worth.

Sharing boats, planes, cars, and bikes to arrive on that special night. The lucky find places to stay with friends, family, or in grand hotels. Others are clustered under trees on hard ground, dreaming of winning.

During the day, music pounds, dancers sway, as songs are sung with gusto, adding to the building excitement. As food and drink are consumed, they are ready to make their way to the stadium to cheer their heroes on.

The fans stream to chosen stand ends to shout encouragement to their national side, throwing words, some unmentionable, to distract the other side's players on the field.

National anthems are sung, fidgeted through as, like thoroughbred horses, the crowd is highly strung, braced, ready to go. The referee points to the spot after a coin spin, declaring which end they choose to play first.

The players gather in their allotted places, identifying numbers and colours on their kit. The referee calls them to order, and the whistle blows. The crowd roars. The ball is spinning on its way.

Two halves are played before the end, and there can be only one heroic national winner. In worldwide homes, streets, and bars, the winners will be celebrated, their names engraved in the memories of all who were proud to have been there, the match told and retold.

The losers, hurt by pride, with “if only” bursting through, at the loss of the so-longed-for prize of World Cup winners. They have to realise they, too, are winners to have reached the semi-final of World Football, in front of millions and millions of fans.

It means they, too, are at the top of their game, going home with pride, to celebrate and prepare for the next strong international side, and another World Cup Final game now four years away.

BELIEVE IN OUR WORLD

I believe in miracles, that birds can fly,

I believe the rain will fall, in parts of the world at different times.

Sometimes, it will flood, at others, hardly a trickle is revealed.

I believe the sun will shine to warm the day and chase germs and pesky bugs away.

At times, it heats the earth to dust, water evaporates and it fails to stay.

I hope that our human presence, in this world is tempered,

By a much softer, kinder, sharing, caring, nurturing hand.

To preserve this Earth our, very precious land.

WELCOME

Since people have spoken or met singularly or in groups, the word "Welcome" has been used as a greeting, with multiple meanings attached.

It is brilliant when it works and disastrous when it fails and is rebuffed.

We welcome you, to try to express some occasions, when this word has meant something to you good or bad.

THE FAIRIES

The fairies are approaching with feather dusters,

To flick away worldly concerns, keeping them safe

’Til you awaken, refreshed, to review them on a new day.

THOUGHTS

I want to be kind

I want to be caring

I want to be friendship-sharing

I want to be fun, a laughter maker

I want an occasional hug

I want to be a secret sharer

I want to be a quiet listener

I would love someone to be there when I need any of the above.

BE SURE

Be sure not to close the door of your life completely.

Leave it open just a little crack.

So when the storm is over,

You can gently ease your way back.

TRUTH

It's time to be honest, as lies do not work here anymore.

Let the truth push back strongly where lies once pushed it over.

So Peace may be restored in our time.

NEW THOUGHTS

Open the door to escape Loneliness

     SMILE

          GREET

                SPEAK

When safe to do so say:

                HELLO THERE!

To break loneliness aim to meet a new friend a day.

Do not beat yourself up if you don’t, just keep trying.

HOPE

Hope is what the whole World is searching for and clinging onto.

Each crumb of hope you find pass it on, it might just help someone.

Hope and kindness is a feeling well worth universal spreading.

TRUST

Trust is an important human element.

Hard to win, easy to lose.

Trust can be damaged by early experiences.

Colouring future relationships,

With difficulty in casting off past memories.

VALUE

Every human has value.

It is up to the individual to settle,

For the value most acceptable for them.

Sometimes a great deal of soul,

Searching is needed to spread over time,

To find peace and value ourselves.

FREEDOM AND PEACE

Freedom and peace,

Sit comfortably together in life.

When either is threatened,

Or damaged chaos reigns.

Freedom is only achieved,

When it is powerful enough!

To be valued and shared evenly,

Protecting everyone, not just a few.

LIFE

Each new life has a path to follow, to take them day by day into tomorrow.

All we hope is that the path is straight, with pleasant stops and caring people to share their lives with.

Beautiful; just wish all children had the chance of a good start.

It makes such a difference.

ENCOURAGEMENT

There are days when we need a bit of encouragement from others and days when we help others when they need encouragement.

A few encouraging words can help lighten your feelings when you have a sad or difficult day.

So spreading encouragement when needed is a good thing to do.

MOMENTS & MEMORIES

Doesn’t time fly?

Leaving amazing memories for you to relive.

Moments that pass at speed,

Linger in your memory for a lifetime.

JUST SAYING

How do we keep words in our heads?

Words that should never be said?

Keep them trapped till only the truth is revealed,

Before calmly saying what has to be said.

WORDS SPOKEN IN ANGER

WORDS SPOKEN IN ANGER

Words spoken in anger often carry immediate regret.

No amount of apologies clears their memory from their head.

Time is the only healer and we sometimes run out of that.

WORDS REPEATED

WORDS REPEATED

Words repeated and repeated and thought over

Are not so often fought over.

WORDS DROP

WORDS DROP

Words drop,

From my heart.

Onto a page,

Where they stop!
