PIANO TUNE

I heard a piano tinkling a tune.

Starting slowly, awakening me from a gentle dream.

My body began to stir, to awaken to the tug of each note.

My feet started moving in a rhythm all of their own.

My body responded, too, stretching and moving in time with the tune.

Before sitting up and balancing myself, important before being enticed down onto the floor.

The piano tempo began to increase as I reached my arms up over my head in response to the notes.

Swaying my torso with increased vigour, taking deeper breaths.

The impulsive rhythms swung me in a dance around my bed.

My muscles stopped their complaints and moved in a smoother, amazing, floaty glide.

As I made my way to the bathroom just as the piano tinkling faded, to be heard no more.

I stopped in front of the mirror, fully awake,

for the ablutions and the beginning of, I hope, a fun day.

HIDDEN TALENT

My mother sat down, when pressured by family members at a party, to play the piano.

After grumblings and hesitation, she asked, “What would you like me to play?”

The request was for a modern popular tune of the time. To my amazement, the melody rang out in perfection, with no sheet music. Several other requests followed.

In all my sixteen years, at that time, I had no knowledge or experience of my mother playing the piano. I knew she used to play the violin and ukulele, though I had never heard her play them either.

She never gave us an explanation for not sharing such a gift with us. A shame, as my sister and I loved music, and we loved her dearly. As far as I know, she never touched a piano again.

MUSIC IS MAGIC

Happy World Music Day

Music is Magic!

With one turn of the switch, you can be twirled around your room or transported out of the house and onto a stage...

Or magically moved thousands of miles, into countries and cultures you have never seen before.

Music is Magic!

It will tantalize and titillate your nervous system into action if it strikes the right notes...

Or have you curled up in rejection pleading for silence after a savage attack on your delicate senses?

Music is Magic!

You can throw notes out in song, plucking others out of silent instruments, when waiting by themselves.

Music is a magical healer when recorded and played on its own.

So let the music flow on and on and on!

THE UNHEARD SINGER, SINGING FOR A LIFE

Alice, a young girl of about fourteen, was rather shy and anxious and found it rather difficult to fit in at school. She loved music and singing in particular, but whenever she asked to do either her anxiety took over and she made a mess of it. So much so that whenever an opportunity came to join the others in a show, they would say don’t ask her, she is no good.

The truth is that she had a beautiful voice with perfect pitch and real power, and she longed to sing with them. Instead, she used to go down to the riverside near her home and sing her heart out, with the water and the rustling leaves as her orchestra.

One day she was walking along the river bank, singing away as usual when she heard a cry from the river. She stopped and stood still trying hard to hear where the cry came from.

It came again faintly and there in the river, hanging on grimly, to one of the trailing branches of a big willow tree, was a young boy. She knew at once she could not reach him as she was too short.

Then she remembered passing two men on their way to play cricket in the nearby field. If she could just get them to help. However, the young boy was at the end of his strength and she felt if she left him he might let go.

So she decided to use her voice to sing for help. She sang her message, ‘Help, help, a boy is drowning in the river, by the big willow tree, come quickly, help us, help us.

Her voice soared loudly and clearly above the river sounds, repeating its message time and time. Every so often she stopped to call encouragement to the boy in the river.

Then help arrived. It was the two men she had passed earlier. They had turned back when they heard her singing, and because it was so beautiful they listened and heard the important message, and came at once, running as fast as they could across the field straight to the willow tree.

They soon formed a chain and pulled the lad from the river he was so grateful, but he could hardly speak as his teeth were chattering. Using his portable phone, one of the men called for an ambulance.

They both turned to congratulate Alice on her life-saving performance, and her wonderful voice, but  Alice had reverted to her usual anxious state and slipped away when everyone was busy.

A few days later, one of the men was explaining what had happened to a friend who was a newspaper reporter, who then decided to find Alice. He found her at school the next day and spoke to the headmistress about Alice’s amazing feat. She arranged to announce the event to the school and publicly congratulate Alice.

At first, it was quite an ordeal for her, but then her spirit soared, ‘No one wanted me to sing before now they can’t wait to hear me.’ Then she gave her second lifesaving performance.

The life she was saving this time was her own and you could have heard a pin drop as she sang. In the end, there was a moment's complete silence before the thunderous applause. Alice had saved herself from a lifetime of anxiety and fear.

SHOE SHUFFLE

Shoe shuffle, shoe shuffle, slide away and glide.

Shoe shuffle, shoe shuffle, wriggle left and right,

Shoe shuffle stop, and bend down low,

Shoe shuffle, shoe shuffle, off we go

Tippy toe, tippy toe, tippy toe.

Shoe shuffle, hold your partner, slide away and glide.

Shoe shuffle, lead her in a wriggle, left and right.

Shoe shuffle both, gently bend down low,

Shoe shuffle, shoe shuffle off we go.

Tippy toe, tippy toe, tippy toe.

TOMORROW

Tomorrow I will sing sing sing!

With the joy of living pouring out of me.

Words of feeling to share around,

To help feet strengthen on the ground.

Tomorrow I will sing sing sing!

With my body in rhythm swaying.

Telling a story to lift spirits,

To take them to a joyous place.

Tomorrow I will sing sing sing!

With my heart releasing.

Each word with as much feeling,

To send everyone into happiness reeling.

Sing, sing, sing!

Everybody sing, sing, sing!

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME SHOES

Please give me some shoes and rhythms I can dance to.

A flute, fiddle and drums rhythms I relate to so well.

So play away till the music reaches my feet and my toes.

A tap here, a flick and click there, then tap, tap, tap again.

Legs elevated one at a time in a straight line.

Arms raised to add to the story.

Elegantly displaying my skirt’s twirling from time to time.

A stamp loudly and loudly again, as the music challenges me to follow.

Faster, faster, faster, faster!

Stamp, stamp!

Tap, flick, click!

Tap, tap, tap!

My breath is quickening, how much longer can I keep in step.

The final beat and note comes and the music ends, my feet stop and arms drop.

Applause rings out, I am now a proud Irish step dancer.

NEW NOTE

Sat at the piano in a depressed mood. My hands lingered on the lower keys.

A song I attempted to sing was too low for me.

Moving my fingers to a higher key, the mood struggled along to follow me.

I went an octave higher and suddenly, they snuggly managed to fit and a song I did produce.

Bravely, I moved yet once more, and a delicious change took place.

The sweetest sound did at last emerge, to chase away my dour lament.

FOLLOW THE TUNE

Follow the tune and open up your eyes.

Feel it trickle through every part you know.

With its gentle calling, move each limb to start following.

Breathe deeply, relax and drop your shoulders.

Stand tall and tighten up your core.

With the tune in mind, sweep your arms in time as though gently parting still water.

Move forward, rising and falling on heels as you move off, then on your toes.

Before you know it, you will be dancing to the tune, entrancing.

I hope I have got that right.

If not, take warning, find a supporting partner and enjoy a lovely time.

A SONG TO RAISE THE SPIRIT

The music reached out and touched the silent singer.

As she passed the well-known notes around in her head.

Gradually relaxing shoulders that had been held too tightly.

Breathing in deeply to expand the lungs little used for singing now.

Lifting her diaphragm comfortably upwards to release the breath.

Allowing gentle sounds to flow.

Gaining confidence as music and lyrics combined.

Not quite the quality obtained years ago.

Yet joy flowed to every part of her spirit as she sang to the empty room.

THE CALL OF MUSIC

Walking along the street, I hear music calling,

Louder, louder, louder.

My pace starts to change to match the beat,

Faster, faster, faster.

One step forward, two back, three forward,

Stamp, stamp, stamp.

Step to the left then to centre again,

And to the right and back again,

Sway, sway, sway.

Arms up, swing to the left and right,

Above head, wrists join the action,

Clap, clap, clap.

My whole body moves to the wonderful sound,

And I sing, sing, sing.

Music has the power to move us as it grows louder, faster, encouraging, stamping, swaying, clapping, singing and quiet listening.

CLAP HANDS

CLAP HANDS

Clap hands, stamp your feet,

Dance along the street.

When music in your headphones

provides the exciting beat.

Sing loud and strong.

You won’t hear it but other people can.

They will join in, too,

every time you stop and stand.

Don’t be shy; you can do it.

Clap hands, stamp your feet,

Then move along the street.

I HEARD

I HEARD

I heard a merry singer singing a catchy song.

I was swept along by the beat and rhythm.

A note or two I missed, that is true,

Yet how wonderful it felt singing along with you.

When the singing ended, the music did not stop

As, trapped in my brain, it continued to be heard

With me the singer, singing for others this time instead.

GIVE ME A TUNE

GIVE ME A TUNE

Give me tune, a lively one will do, that I can dance about vigorously to.

Play me a romantic melody I can sing out loud, gently taking listeners back to the romance and excitement of their day, encouraging them to sing along with the chorus, allowing memories long locked away to come flooding back.

Sweep me off my feet with an orchestra grand, in full flow, stimulating my imagination, releasing new thinking with their emotional playing.

Music has the power to move and change feelings at all levels.

From the thrilling music attached to a murder mystery, encouraging me to cover my eyes, to the lovely words delivered by the hero, with music that lingers and lingers around in my head.

Now, a lullaby is needed as my day has just come to an end, as I curl up in bed and let the music comfortably take me away as it flows.

WHAT IS A SONG

WHAT IS A SONG

When is a song not a song?
When words are few and not strung all the way through.
When is music not a song?
When the music plays madly leaving the lyric silently behind.
A song is when the music and lyrics join in perfection,
And sweep you along in celebration, shutting out all else magic.

THE SPLIT

The split when it came was devastating.

The audiences vanished, hard to replace them.

My music burned and raged in me, with no release.

No one to give appreciation.

Loneliness descended, finance too, yet you never left.

Just increased the desire to write and write.

When will this virus take it’s leave,

So I can share the music trapped within me.

DANCING MEMORIES

There is nothing quite as challenging as ballroom dancing as a beginner.

The surrendering over of body and mind to one another and slowly together faultlessly following the thrill of the music.

The addiction is complete when you are no longer dodging feet, the rhythm controls you together and swings you magically on.

For years dancing was my challenge, my relaxation, till an accident stopped it all.

Yet when the music is right, in my head the heavenly feeling comes right back, I am dancing again.

Enjoy every moment in the knowledge by putting yourself out there, you are encouraging new dancers and taking retired dancers with the music in enthralling enchantment around the floor.

Wonderful, have fun!

COLE PORTER NIGHT

The evening began with music I did not know.

The magic started as the Cole Porter tunes swung into play,

The Jazz gripped the room and listeners started to sway.

Many taken back to their youth so far away.

Voices softly joined in the lyrics well known.

Remembering times long ago when in a Smokey room,

Love touched them with these beautiful tunes.

Memories to take away and enjoy another day.
