YESTERDAY

Yesterday is already a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision
But today,
Well-lived makes every yesterday
A dream of happiness,
And every tomorrow a vision of hope
Look well therefore to this day!

HEART AND PENSHIP

My heart is awake,
and attached to a pen,
Words keep flowing,
on to the paper,
again and again...

EARLY LEARNING

I am learning to walk.
Look at me, look at me.

I am learning to talk.
Listen to me, listen to me.

I am making decisions.
“No!” said with a smile or a scream,

It seems to work, with a quick scamper off.
Soon I’ll be a grownup; able to have my say.

In this family where I am loved.
If not, one day, I will just walk away.

EAGLE FEAST

Oh, eagle flying circles in the sky.
Searching for a meal to tempt your eye.
Below, on the Tarmac lying dead still.
It is the tasty morsel that meets the bill.

Straight as an arrow, down beside it you flop.
Ripping, tearing, denying others the tasting.
Enjoying the flavour of the still-warm flesh.
Crash a deadly hit, you spin and die.

There on the road, you now wait,
For others to come and appreciate.
The meal laid out before them.
My wish now, is that your spirit flies free.

DIPPY DUCK

Dippy liked to swim around,
Diving for some food,
Came to shore when he got bored,
Or was just not in the mood.

Dippy did not like the winter,
When it was cold and the water froze,
So off to somewhere warmer
Every year with friends, they flocked and rose.

Dippy spent a lot of time,
With own kind and others strangely,
Similar and familiar, landing
On inland waterways.

Natural ponds or others made by man,
Providing it had ashore and
Water with plants and stuff,
He could not ask for more.

Dippy was what we called a Drake,
Our name for a male duck,
A hen is a female one,
Though different from the chicken’s that cluck.

Dippy came every year,
Back to the same old pond,
Gave the impression to those who knew him,
Of this place, he was very fond.

Then one year did disappear,
Never to be seen again.
Away from all the cold flying and pain,
He flew to a place of peace where good ducks go.

I miss my mate called Dippy,
For feeding him, so I did
Lots of bread which I used to throw to him,
While squirrels ran and hid.

For on the land they’d try to steal,
So on water, I scattered some for him,
In spite of the amazing tree-climbing ability,
Squirrels don’t like to swim.

A year later a young duck,
Came sailing by excited,
He gave a cry, Dad said to say goodbye.
I’ll be here next year see you then when I fly in.

TIGA - COLLAR FELT

One, bitterly cold, windy day, while out walking my sister’s dog, along a seaside path, beside the main road, I felt an odd feeling down near my ankle.

I took no notice and increased my speed glancing at the nose to nose cars. I bet they were thinking, glad we are in here and not out there with them.

The feeling happened again this time I paused to look down and to my horror, I was walking along holding a lead and an empty collar.

Looking back there was Tiga, following me. You could almost hear her say this is a bit of a rum do. Her head and tail were up and her intelligent brown eyes looked a bit puzzled.

I then took a fit of laughing at the spectacle we must have made for the Commuter traffic.

CONSOLING DANCE

Every Friday, live music floated down from a balcony enticing dancers out of the shadows into the light of a vast ballroom.

Men entered through doorways from the right, women from the left.

Some waited just outside the doors, ready to join the crowd.

Others hesitated a distance away, awaiting courage, to propel them forward.

Yet others, unable to take that one last step to join the dance, roamed around in the grounds, rocking and humming to the music, alone.

On this one night, every week year after year male and females met, to talk to touch and to dance.

What did they whisper together?
What hopes and dreams did they share?
What pledges of love?

What secret kisses snatched, during their weekly dancing embrace.

Once the last dance was over they had to leave, men to the right women to the left.

Taking with them the memories of the music, the thrill of human touch and their secrets to mull over and cherish till the next dance.

They were the inmates of a mental institution in the 1890s, in the North of England, it is numbing to imagine that many of them attended this dance once a week for the rest of their active lives.

AIRY LAUGH

A mother and her little boy went for a walk to see some horses with their foals.

After watching for a while, the little boy bent down, pulled up a tuft of grass, offered it to the horses calling.

‘Horsey, darling, come and eat, din, din!’

One of the older horses looked up, snorted and ambled over for the grass offered.

The mother, held the child firmly, just out of reach of the horses full neck stretch as he offered his gift.

The horse gently searched for the grass with its warm velvety lips, puffed out tickly breath as it grasped the grass and began chewing.

The child brushed his hands together, raising his shoulders in delight, glancing up at his mother in triumph.

All of a sudden the horse let rip a blast of wind from its rear end. There was a stunned silence.

The child shouted:

‘The horse farted Mummy, he farted, he farted, pooh!’

He began laughing till he cried.

He continued laughing all the way home and raced in to tell his father.

‘The horse farted, Daddy he farted.’

The merriment continued as other family members arrived for a visit and the tale was retold.

A PERFECT MOMENT

Spread out on my knee
While I drink my tea
You Purr contentedly.

You are not my cat
But how we both
Take advantage of that!
