YAWN, YAWN, YAWN
Yawn, yawn, yawn!
Snore, snore, snore!
I am happily sleeping!
Someone is calling, “Time to get up. It's morning.”
I do not want to leave my bed just yet.
So I am ignoring it, starting my pretend snoring.
Someone has opened the door, firmly calling,
“Up now. I know you’re not asleep. If you don’t, I will say I’ve made your breakfast,
when I have not!”
Come on now.
Struggle up. It’s a beautiful day!
I have made lots of plans for us to do and enjoy.
A walk in a meadow with lots of wildflowers.
A carrot for a horse, or a donkey or two.
Into a cafรฉ where you can choose what to eat.
Chatting with friends who might already be there.
A play on a swing or a slide, giving you a laugh and giggle inside.
Then indoors for a storytelling sit and listen.
Is that you I hear, cleaning your teeth and having a good wash?
I will start a real breakfast, a favourite of yours.
If you need help with dressing, give me a call.
When we are ready, we’ll set off to the Ferring Sense Centre.
Where we will join in the fun with everyone.

DAPPLED WALK
In the dappled shade, a cricket sings, to entice a lady to come wandering.
Ants, moving in lines as though under orders to gather insects, to move them out of sight to their underground houses.
Waiting to provide food when work stops for the day.
A snail starts its leisurely walk, munching greenery on the way.
Spiders paragliding in a frantic effort to repair their webs, ready to capture unwary insects during the new day.
As humans, some of us see what is going on.
Others gaze towards the sky, admiring birds and tree branches high, which produce music all day long.
I draw breath and start to sing in praise of peaceful feelings, a dappled walk can bring.

BELIEVE IN OUR WORLD
I believe in miracles, that birds can fly,
I believe the rain will fall, in parts of the world at different times.
Sometimes, it will flood, at others, hardly a trickle is revealed.
I believe the sun will shine to warm the day and chase germs and pesky bugs away.
At times, it heats the earth to dust, water evaporates and it fails to stay.
I hope that our human presence, in this world is tempered,
By a much softer, kinder, sharing, caring, nurturing hand.
To preserve this Earth our, very precious land.

THE SNEAK THIEF
I was sitting writing at my desk with Lily relaxed on her cushion.
When she sat up abruptly startling me.
I looked above my laptop lid to see what was happening.
I laughed as two young foxes were playing with an empty butter carton, fighting over it on top of each other.
Throwing it up in the air, before scrapping again. It was amusing to watch.
All of a sudden they stopped and headed for the wild pond to have a drink.
I continued to watch as one headed towards their den hidden between our neighbourhood gardens.
The other came nearer to the house.
I wondered what he was going to do.
I almost burst out laughing, which would have scared him off.
He was eating the loganberries growing on the lower branches of the bushes.
I could not believe what he did next, he stretched up to his full height and pulled the branches laden with loganberries down towards him.
He was having a wonderful feast.
I did not know foxes ate berries, now I have to inform my young man what was happening to the Loganberry, and why he only had a few for us.
Our garden is a hive of wildlife activity, which keeps Lily and me amused!

FINAL WORDS
Death is the final part of life.
When words unspoken remain unsaid.
Returning to haunt you unexpectedly from time to time instead.
So release your words as a final message to remain at peace after that.

SULTRY NIGHT
A night we fight for sleep.
Flipping bed covers to and fro fighting the heat.
As we turn left and right multiple times
Trying to slip into refreshing unconsciousness.
The brain is turning over the next day’s program,
Even as you implore, let me sleep, let me sleep.
Tomorrow I have so many appointments to keep,
Need my wits about me.
I will go for a wander, a refreshing cold drink, a scribble of bullet points.
To anchor the wild thoughts, allowing sleep to creep its way back.
Before dawn and the alarm clock’s strident annoying calling,
Just when I was enjoying my quiet snoring and real sleep.

I AM NOT A BUG!
Hello, what a lovely bug you are.
๐ I am not a bug! I am a bird!
No you're not; you’re a bug like me.
๐ I am not a bug, I tell you.
You look like me, though in much brighter colours and I am a ladybug.
๐ Well I am not! I am a ladybird!
Where did you come from to be so misinformed? I bet it was from that place called America.
Yes, I am. How did you know that?
๐ Because some of your ancestors left here and over there changed some of our words. How they decided to change my name to bug I will never understand! Most bugs are called ugly here. I am not. I am a beautiful ladybird. You must be hungry coming all that way?
I hitched my way on a few ships, rested on some islands, never knew where I was going till I hopped off here. It looks a mighty fine place.
๐ Why don’t you join me? I see something tasty over there. Just remember I am a ladybird and we will get on just fine. Don’t try to change any more of our words.

SQUIRREL PARTY
We bought a metal owl-shaped bird feeder on a spindly, twisted, slippery pole.
We were assured it was completely squirrel resistant and expecting a triumph we carried it home.
On it, we hung three types of birdseed containers, dangling, to meet most seed bird's needs.
It took a while for them to feel safe enough to drop in for a feed;
Cautiously flying down to inspect it before trying a single seed.
Early one morning as I opened up my curtains, I saw to my shock and dismay.
A squirrel dangling from a container, holding on by only one toe, upside down and swaying, at the seeds, he was having a good go.
He pulled out the seeds with his teeth and passed them to his eagerly waiting hands.
As he quickly chewed the nuts, his cheeks began to expand.
Time and time again he tirelessly repeated this movement, as fast as he possibly could.
One by one the birds started to arrive, inspecting the ground for bits of seeds that might have survived. It started with sparrows, greenfinches too,
Pigeon’s strutting in quietly for a free nibble without a coo.
Now we are quite pleased the feeder failed, as we have early morning squirrel and bird parties.
Come to think of it! Early evening rave-ups are quite commonplace too.
Though we do not partake in the menu, laughter and stifled giggles we have more than a few.
As we watched, hidden by the curtain, from the furry and feathered party reveals cautious view.

THE BARRIER
I have had a lifelong barrier, fear of writing a word.
I am intellectually and verbally firm, but when I put it down on paper things go very wrong.
Form filling is a nightmare if there is a need for elaboration and creative wording about my career expectations.
I hunt through and choose short easy familiar words instead of expansive, creative, flowing, intellectually-shaking wonderful words.
Oh, I know them, they are very familiar to me and I long to use them with a creative flourish, if only my brain could be attached to paper without the use of a pen.
If I could think them down, see them cascading over the page in fluent picturesque abundance.
Now I have discovered a wonderful key! Spell-check, it's part of my computer package.
Now I am set free, I can't stop writing; words are pouring out from me.
Alright, sometimes I am stumped when I am given a choice and a dictionary is needed to finish the word I really mean,
On one or two occasions I still make an error but, oh gosh, it is getting better and better.
Now I will show you!
The world of words has swung open for me, I am free!!!

VOLUNTEERS ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY
No matter where you go, volunteers are hard to find. Organisations that have helped for years to keep the home fires burning are shutting their doors; no volunteers are applying.
Yet the numbers suffering from the damaging, brain-freezing, isolating condition called loneliness are multiplying, and multiplying around the world.
You hear the sadness and loneliness on the buses, in the doctor’s and hospital waiting areas, in schools and universities, on park benches. So many sufferers are dying of the curable disease of loneliness.
Yet the cure is there; you can afford it, and it is so satisfying. Volunteer. Give it a try; take the first step: say “May I help you?” Chatting and helping one another, combining your strengths and weaknesses, is so rewarding.
Friendships are made, many lasting whole lifetimes. You will never be turned away as not needed. You will be welcomed with open arms and gratitude, with whatever you are able or willing to offer as a VOLUNTEER.
Then you can start really living. There is never an overcapacity of volunteers. You will always be needed.

SWAN UPPING
Swanning along, swans on the Thames have their yearly health check today.
No idea how they manage that: they are powerful birds, always on the move.
It is a tradition going back a thousand years and is called Swan Upping.
The swans are the property of the Sovereign, now King Charles III.
Swans used to be a delicacy, but now they are carefully protected.

PICKING UP THE POST
Yesterday was a day of inspections and results, we started on a high.
The letterbox clattered I was there in a flash, to perform my most important task at the start of the day.
Picking up the post and carrying it to a member of the family.
Some days, I play hard to get and wander around the room with the letters in my mouth, tail wagging before giving them up.
This past week the post seems to have become important and a disappointment.
Dad has been waiting with anxiety for an official letter.
As I picked the post up, Dad appeared down the stairs.
He asked me to, ‘Hand it over please Satu.’
I did as I sensed he was worried.
He sorted through the few letters in his hand, held on to one, glanced at it tore open the envelope and read anxiously.
Wobbly and I sat watching him expectantly.
A smile appeared, ‘I have my driving license back I can now drive again.’
Wobbly jumped up in delight and they both hugged one another.
I just pranced around sneezing and sneezing, trying to join in.
It was a very important letter.
‘What a relief, I have my independence back. It is not till you lose a part of or all of your sight, that you realize how vital it is. I am a very lucky happy man.
I am glad I went to seek help when those black floaters and a bit of something hanging appeared in my eyes.
Apparently, that is classed as a medical emergency and should be seen and treated urgently. So pleased I went, I was not going to you know!’
‘Oh I know,’ said Wobbly, ‘ that is why I became such a nag.’
Dad replied, ‘Now we can start planning our trip.’
I was pleased as well, not sure about their mention of the trip though.
That is a black cloud hanging over Lily and me, we don’t want them to go. I gave myself a leg shake to stay positive.

I AM A WOBBLER!
I am a Wobbler,
Yes, I am!
Wobble in and out
When I can.
Carrying stories,
Within and without.
Some I cry, shout,
Laugh out loud about it.
If you sign on.
You carry this logo,
Around with you.
You're a Wobbler!
You're a Wobbler too!

WALKING THROUGH
On walking through from the bright sunlight into the cool and calming, soothing, dappled tree line, to the change of noise, with bird song coming to the fore, with the quiet plop of falling leaves perhaps never heard before.
A scurry overhead as squirrels chase from branch to branch and tree to tree. The gentle music added from the slowly flowing stream, with fish, some resting, others browsing in weeds, trying to remain unseen.
Water bubbling loudly around some rocks, forcing its way through. They were crossing the bridge, echoing a different sound, startling some rabbits having a chew.
How I love a walk in the country.
You should try it; you really should do.

THE SKY
Searching eyes raised to the clear night sky.
Following the flow of the Milky Way.
Where stars are cuddled in clouds of dust,
There in uncountable time they are born and fade away.
We acknowledge we are too small to matter,
In this immense and distant universal scatter.

SEEKING WISDOM
A Chief was very worried, he had to make a big decision for his tribe. They looked up to him, he could do no wrong,
He was a hero. He felt there was too much pressure for him to carry, so he went to the sea.
He swam on the surface breathing slowly and deeply, trying to clear his thoughts.
It did not seem to work, so he took a deep breath and dived.
Swimming slowly through the seaweed beds, swaying on the ocean floor.
Suddenly he saw a seahorse, clinging upright to a weed trying to hide, to be ignored.
The chief called out to him and said: ‘How are you my friend, may I hitch a ride with you?’
The sea horse said neither yes or no and brushed against him.
To the chief’s surprise, he found he had magically shrunk in size. He could ride with the seahorse swinging in and out with the tide.
As he rode he pondered the problem, much smaller now due to his shrinking. He realised, perhaps instead of being the all-knowing mighty one. He had to share the problem with everyone in the tribe. It was the best solution.
He thanked the sea horse for it’s company as it silently moved away. He pushed back up to the surface into the light of day.
Sharing his problem, the tribe grew in strength with added responsibility and pride.

DON’T!
Don’t speak to me.
I don’t want to be near you.
Don’t speak to me.
I don’t want to hear you.
Gone are the days
When sweet talking was your way,
And I melted with love
Each time you came to see me.
Where did that lovely man go?
Now a fist comes to hurt me.
I never know when,
A cuddle comes first,
Then a bruise to shame me.
I tried leaving several times before.
But you poured out your sorries,
Saying, “I will never do it again.”
Each time, I believed you.
Not any more.
Don’t speak to me
I never want to hear you.
I never want to be near you.
That’s a ring at the door.
The police are here.
I am finally leaving.
And you are going, too,
Where you will never hurt anyone any more.

A FAIRY NIGHT
The fairies wait, for the sun to fade.
As night darkness makes it’s way through the branches diminishing light.
The night creatures creep out calling, ‘Is it alright? Is it alright?’
The fairies reply as they flit from tree to tree, ‘It is safe for you and me!’
The moon when allowed freedom from the clouds.
Enhances fairy dances in the glade.
The crickets keep the rhythm going.
As magical music and dancing is displayed.
Soon new dawn arrives and everyone disappears inside.
To await another beautiful night
When the fairies once again enjoy a frolic of delight.

THOUGHTS
I want to be friendship sharing.
I want to be fun, a laughter maker.

I want to be a quiet listener.
I want to be a secret sharer.
I would love someone to be there,

IMPERIAL GARDENS
In the Imperial Gardens, the willows bent and sighed, sharing court secrets heard nearby.
Dipping leaves in the water as it languished, slipping, bubbling musically, on it’s way.
The carp played hide and seek, away from the majestic eagle eyes.
With courtesans, twittering like birds, walking sedately by arm in arm, leaving scented remembrances behind.
All is at peace in this garden, at this time.

THERE ARE CREATURES IN MY GARDEN
There are creatures in my garden, yet rarely are they seen at all.
Hidden in the walls are spiders, the odd lizard, leather jackets, ants in battalions patrol, as magic cleaning up insect and debris machines.
Weeds scatter seeds for their plants to keep on growing, for snails to slimily keep on their contented munching and gnawing. Sadly your cherished plants are on their menu, as they have a hankering for them too.
Tiny frogs seek shelter in the dampened cracks, hiding from aerial birds and ground, fox, cat and dog attacks.
A mole surfaces to leave a hill in the middle of the lawn, blindly, burying, furiously underneath, hunting juicy worms from dusk to dawn, leaving the molehills for you to pat down.
Butterflies and ladybirds, gavotting about giving amazing colourful displays.
The foxes lay against the wall, enjoying the warmth of the sun and dappled shade after a night on the essential food hunting run.
Squirrels, furiously battling in the trees, as nuts rain down to be lost in the ground. To start new tree growth in this fascinatingly active garden of mine.
Where all I have to do is sit, quietly, relax, whiling away some precious me time.

THE GARDEN’S HAD A HAIRCUT
The garden’s had a haircut.
The wildlife is in a whirl.
All their cosy, shady, hiding, nesting places have been clipped away.
There were shouts of indignation,
And fights for the best and safest places to roost for the night,
Wondering if it would be better to move to another garden site.
Sleep on it, sleep on it; it might look better in daylight.
This is too good a spot to leave,
With plentiful water and insects darting about on the wing.
Even the cat is friendly, too old to chase us for food, play or anything.
Caterpillars creeping in the bushes ready for a quick takeaway.
On consideration, let’s rebuild and stay.

PICTURE IT
Picture the bluest of skies.
Parched almost barren land, toppling down into deep gorges.
Rugged and dangerous when straying from paths not planned.
On the way down, coolness encapsulates and sooths the hot skin.
Greenness calms away the harsh golden glare of the higher barren land.
A glimpse of paradise at the bottom, water clear, clean and cool beckons.
Just a ripple records the whole picture from above and below.
As waterfalls splash for ever downwards, oxygenating as they go.
The temptation to slip in is hard to resist, though some do.
An enchanting place, which you will return to time and again in your minds eye.
An Australian gem.

SECRET FLYING VISITOR
A dart of movement in the garden caught my attention.
It was so small, hopping in and out of the bushes, moving as quick as a flash.
Watching to see where its next hop would be.
I wonder what type of bird this new visitor might be?
It must have found something good to eat, or wanted a rest.
I had to wait patiently in the cold, ’til my bird knowledge could be put to the test.
It’s a Jenny Wren! A Jenny Wren!
I wonder if it’s nesting nearby?
What a treat that would be, to watch the hatching of the shy and secretive Jenny Wrens: a pure delight for me.

SHAGGY DOG
My husband and I sat waiting for a meal to be served in the hall of a Spanish fortified farmhouse.
As we were not sure of the etiquette, we were warming ourselves at the blazing welcoming log fire.
The weather had turned into an unexpectedly cold May and we were freezing.
All of a sudden in came a large, grey and white English Sheepdog just like the Dulux adverts.
He came rushing over in welcome and being a dog lover I went to return his greeting.
Delight changed to horror as he was soaking wet.
I took off around a convenient table with the dog in delighted pursuit, trying to escape being covered in mud and rainwater.
My husband decided that a manly approach might be better.
He stood still and called in his loudest fiercest voice ‘SIT’.
To my amazement, the dog sat at once and then to my very wicked delight, stood up on his hind legs and put his forefeet on his shoulders.
Then it was every man for himself round and round the table till the dog gave up in disgust, and headed towards the kitchen door.
To what he and I hoped would be a nice meal. It was not his fault we did not know Spanish!
I had to laugh. If my friends had seen me running away from a dog they would not have believed it.

TAKE ME
Take me by the hand into that wonderland,
Where the grass is always green and flowers proudly stand.
As we wander to the place where children laugh and shout,
Whizzing around on that super roundabout.
Running to and fro, playing hide and seek until found out.
Stopping to play hopscotch drawn upon the ground.
Climbing onto swings, flying higher, higher with squeals of delight.
On a rocking horse, proudly king of all I can see, with you pushing me.
Then the moment comes, time to go.
“Oh no! Please can I have one more go, just one more go?”
Soon, we wander on our way to tea, storytelling and bed.
I can’t help looking back at the wonderland that had been such fun for you and me.

A GLIMPSE
Driving through the countryside on a twisty ride.
A sideways glance caught a hint of blue.
Decorating the woodland floor as we sped along. I gave a shout of joy. It is bluebell time.
Grabbing my iPad, I held it aloft, clicking frantically away.
Madness, as with hope I sought to catch the view of bluebells.
Bluebells as they should be seen: in multitudes swaying above beds of green.
Scattering a heavenly scent, once captured never to be forgotten.
Beneath trees with branches of budding fresh leaves, the sight, so brief, disappeared as we sped along.
In trepidation, my finger tapped back to see what part of the view I had trapped.
The first few were disasters, as in haste I had covered the lens with my finger.
Not what was needed at all; two more gave only a hint of what I was after.
The next, not perfect, gave a glimpse of the bluebells, a delight I was trying to capture to show you.

UNCURLING
Each day, I view the dormant earth in a flower pot.
To watch a small, shiny nose ease its way through.
Stopping and starting ’til the weather is just right.
Long, slender, green leaves protect the bud ’til it too starts revealing.
At first, just a glimpse, then in bright yellow a full flower extending.
A joyful sight as it dances in the brilliant sunlight.
Lifting hearts with thoughts of summer and its approaching delights.
Daffodils showing off their yellow dresses chase away winter distresses.
Paving the way for more flowers to bring smiles and joy to so many faces.

BEES
Come and see the Buzzy Busy Bees.
Buzz, Buzz buzz buzz
Here and there everywhere
Buzz Buzz Buzz Buzz
Popping their heads into flowers to sip nectar;
Buzz buzz buzz buzz gathering pollen,
To hang like shopping bags from their back legs;
Buzz buzz buzz buzz
Weary they can carry no more, we are tired so tired.
Buzz buzz buzz buzz
Turning around and around till they sense the quickest way home.
Flowers
Oh Bees we love your tickling pollen and nectar shaking visits
Buzz Buzz Buzz Buzz
It starts our seeds growing, popping and scattering everywhere.
Buzz Buzz Buzz Buzz
The wind picks them up in the air letting them down again with a plop.
Buzz buzz buzz buzz
Without your help, our flowers and fruit will not start growing.
Birds, Animals, Humans as well.
Oh bees we love you too
Buzz buzz buzz buzz
Without you the insects won’t thrive, we will starve with grumbling insides
No buzz buzz buzz.
There will be no lovely flowers in fields or swaying on fruit trees,
They will be bare.
No more honey to spread on our bread to have for our tea.
No Buzz, Buzz Buzz
No flowers growing around us, well none we can find...
All we can do to help is scatter seeds around the old fashioned way.
Buzz buzz buzz buzz
In every spare space, we can find.
Once-blooming the scent and colour will bring bees buzzing back just in time.

SILENCE OF SOLITUDE
In the silence of solitude, you hear things you never knew you had missed.
Leaves trembling audible shivers, at the wind's gentle caress.
Strange birds, frantic calling, flitting from tree to tree.
A bustling bee, dancing on flower heads, shaking their pollen-free.
Hanging on to its gathered treasure on its back legs, flying home to the hive.
The tantalizing whiff of roses, carried along on the breeze, spreading good cheer.
Dogs setting up a barking chorus, at strangers passing by.
A language, not ours floats from neighbours next door, exchanging pleasantries over the garden wall.
We are here to take it all in!

HERE COMES SUMMER
Here comes Summer, longed for all year through,
School holidays are now fast approaching, too.
Exams will soon be over. What shall we do?
The choices vary between us, as our ages dictate.
Some will be restrained by parents with controlled play.
Others will have holidays abroad by boat or plane.
Budgets for many are oh so tight, they can’t afford such delight.
A part-time job, perhaps the first, comes into sight,
An experience some might remember for the rest of their lives.
Summer is a potpourri of feelings, not all dependent on the weather.
Sometimes friendships long cemented become fragmented.
New relationships burst into view, changing everything.
Ideas that have been churning around have time to expand.
Before you know it, a new business could be planned.
House reviews come to fruition: do we need all the clutter we have?
Wails of distress when you have to let go of things from the past.
Negotiations are required to retain those you love the most.
Summer weather can be a friend or foe.
It can disrupt, causing wails of despair when best-laid plans go awry.
An overabundance of sun interferes with travel and play.
Heatstroke can put you to bed for a couple of days.
Pets too can suffer, needing special care and no middle-of-the-day walks,
Otherwise, burnt paws may cause a trip to the vet and pain for your pet.
Carry water plenty to drink in the car; never lock and leave children or pets unattended in hot weather.
Just the right amount of sun is such fun and brings out the best in almost everyone.
Rain so needed can be such a pest
When it pours in deluges, destroying all the fun plans that you had so carefully made.
Quick thinking: rearrange everything indoors.
For others, it saves watering the garden, refreshing the lawn,
Filling up ornamental or fish ponds.
For some, it can bring destruction and despair to homes, animals and food-bearing land.
Yet it can be fun playing in the cooling rain, in puddles which appear and then simply vanish once more.
So, Summer so longed for, be kind to us, please.
Just the right amount of sun and rain for us to enjoy.
For holidays abroad with no energy and mood-draining queues.
The enjoyment of plans long in the making, just as envisaged.
House repairs and decluttering ticked off the to-do list.
Relationships repaired that had been showing some painful cracks.
New friends made, so we can look back and say, “Do you remember that Summer? Wasn’t it great?”
