CHATTERBOX

I used to be a chatterbox!

Chatted night and day!

Always had to have my say!

One day a sports injury,

Damaged my mouth.

Not one word,

Could I utter,

I was miserable.

At first,

I longed to join in,

Before finding a new delight.

I became a listener.

A new world opened for me.

What a maze of information.

I would have missed it,

If silence had not claimed me.

Now it is sheer bliss,

To quietly listen to you chaps.

WHO NEEDS A LISTENER

Who needs a listener if you can safely talk away to yourself.

In the shower, you can release feelings held in for hours.

What did she say again today, that made anger bubble up?

I had to walk away to stop the words I really wanted to say.

At times it is much better that way.

Here my thoughts can be expressed, you are the perfect silent listener.

I felt my anger, and dirt wash away down the plughole with no resistance.

Refreshed and dressed I can return and express regret at words I once uttered.

Saying sorry, that word that is difficult to say, but really meant.

IN THE PINK

Wrapped in pink cotton and wool trying to keep

the hidden enemy at bay.

Will it accomplish what we hope it might,

and keep us safe till a vaccine is available.

The warmth of the pink gives hope amongst other things,

Adds cheer and brightness as I move head down,

Dodging the bitter wind, stoically on my way.

Looking forward to the summer sunshine to help us,

Till the arrival of vaccine day.

A NEW ISLAND ON THE MAP

From the sea, a mountain arose.

Spewing molten rocks, alight, brightly unforgiving.

We wait for this stage to pass, as cooling breezes steam releases and drifts away.

Or allow as water to drip slowly and gather giving life.

Birds while passing by drop their guano in the fissures and cracks.

Plants begin their green vigorous growing, spreading exotic flowers, to encourage insects to start showing.

A new island now on the map, slowly growing year on year, till the Magna stops.

AN EVENING TO REMEMBER

It was an invitation that gathered six friends together for a social meal on a waning summer evening. Greetings and social chatter flowed between us. As we started the nibbles and the wine.

Our host and hostess busied themselves with tending the barbecue and setting out the accompanying dishes. Offers of help were refused, so we settled to await it’s delivery.

Admiring a newly planted garden, showing it’s advanced growth since our last visit to the new house. It was beautiful, with healthy flourishing plants, which in the dwindling day light, gave different shading, until the candles and outdoor lighting took over to break the darkness.

The silence of the night was only broken by the occasional cicadas and the big-voiced tiny crickets and of course us.

We were honoured by being introduced to the newest member of the family, a puppy to join a new kitten. She is called LuLu and was so placid and well-behaved amongst strangers. It gave the animal lovers amongst us a cuddly moment and a connection to dogs we had shared in the past.

The call came, ‘everything is ready, come and help yourselves.’

What a sight and what choices to make, needless to say, we had to try a bit of everything, how could you say no. It would be disrespectful to our hosts, as they had worked so hard preparing a wonderful meal.

Once we were settled, the conversation and laughter started, stories and shared memories were exchanged.

We had a companionable halt to eating, before we were forced to chose again from the deserts laid so temptingly before us.

None of us could possibly refuse, they were too much of a temptation. After that we moved indoors to have our tea and coffee, till an unexpected bout of cramp brought the wonderful evening to a close.

An evening to place in my memory bank as a keeper.
